Management and Treatment of Diarrhoea

First of all, prevention is very important.

Following proper hand washing habits to maintain Hygiene.

Washing hands frequently, especially before and after eating food, after using the washroom is important.

Sanitization with alcohol-based hand sanitizer at times when washing of hands is not possible.

Keep a check on what you eat and drink and from where you eat, avoid eating and drinking from an unhygienic place.

Drink plenty of water if you are suffering from diarrhoea, if you don’t have availability of filtered water, then boil water before drinking.

Adults should drink water with electrolytes – preparations available in the market in sachets as well as tetra packs with different flavours.

Kids should be given ORS – also available in the market.

In case you cannot get Electrol or ORS then prepare it at home – by adding 6 spoons of sugar and 1 spoon of salt in one litre of boiled water.

Have foods and drinks containing probiotics like Curd; a probiotic drink present under the Brand name of Yakult can also be taken.

Avoid milk and milk products, spicy and highly seasoned food.

Avoid solid food for at least a day; eat light food like boiled rice, khichdi, boiled potatoes, banana, etc.

Aloe Socotrina – loose motions here are accompanied by a great deal of flatus. There is uneasiness, weakness and the patient always remains unsure about what he is going to pass flatus or stool. There is passage of stool even while urinating. There is a gripping kind of pain before, during and after stool.

Podophyllinum – patients suffer from an early morning diarrhoea which is watery, yellow, profuse, forcible and occurs without pain. It is a very good medicine for diarrhoea during dentition. There is a lot of weakness in rectum of patients, rectum prolapses some times before the passage of stool.

Phosphorus – a useful medicine in cases of chronic diarrhoea. Motion is of green colour (like a frog spawn or sago) and usually associated with mucous. Patients usually suffer from morning diarrhoea which is undigested and painless. Diarrhoea is often associated with vomiting.

Argentum Nitricum – stools are green in colour like that of chopped spinach in flakes, there may be blood or mucous present along with the stools. Diarrhoea is usually worse by eating sweets, in patients requiring this medicine. Loose motions due to emotional disturbances, anxiety, mental excitement, comes under the domain of this medicine. There is much spluttering and discharge of flatus with the stools. Useful in cases of Cholera Infantum.

Mercurius Corrosivus – loose stool associated with blood and mucus. There is much straining and tenesmus, which gives a never get done feeling.

Calcarea Carbonicum - one of the greatest remedies for sour smelling and undigested stools. Diarrhoea during dentition in infants with open fontanelles will require Calcarea Carbonicum.
