BERBERIS AQUIFOLIUM 

 

Today I am going to tell you about a wonderful medicine called Berberis Aquifolium. 

 

General introduction:  

Berberis Aquifolium is commonly known as Oregon grape. It belongs to the Mahonia group of the Barberry family of our plant kingdom. 

Homoeopathic medicine is prepared using the tincture of the root of the plant or from the extract fluid of mountain grape. 

Berberis Aquifolium is known to play a very good role in diseases of the skin. 

So, let’s see what more the medicine has to offer. 

 

Mental symptoms: 

  • Patient is dull, unhappy and depressed. 

  • He does not want to do any work, averse to work; does not want to move. 

  • Patient is nervous and restless. 

  • Patient cries hysterically at frequent intervals. 


Head: 

  • Patient suffers from a headache especially on the right side with a sensation as if a weight is pressing down. There is a bilious headache from which the patient also suffers. 

  • There is pain in the region of the right temple which runs down to the teeth. 

  • Patient has a sensation of an iron band just above the ears, which gradually is increasing the compression. 

  • There is scaly eczema on the head. 

 

Eyes: 

  • Patient has a sensation that there is a film before his eyes. 

  • Patients suffering from conjunctivitis may require this medicine. 

  • There is a weak feeling in the eyes; eyes look hollow and tired. 

 

Nose: 

  • There is a desire to sneeze with itching in the nose. 

  • Discharge from the nose is greenish yellow in colour; a stuffy feeling in the nose. 

 

Face: 

  • Very good remedy for acne vulgaris, there are blotches and pimples on the face. 

  • Skin of face is waxy and yellowish white. 

  • It helps in clearing the complexion of a person. 

  • Patient feels flashes of heat on cheeks. 

 

Mouth: 

  • Tongue is thickly coated with a yellowish brown or pasty white colour. 

  • There is soreness of salivary glands and lower teeth. 

  • There is a sensation of blisters on the tongue and sometimes blisters are actually present on the tongue. 

  • A bilious taste remains in mouth after eating. 

 

Throat: 

  • There is dryness in throat. 

 

Stomach: 

  • There is a sudden nausea just after eating. 

  • Patient is hungry soon after eating but there is no desire for food. 

  • There is burning in the stomach. 

  • Nausea associated with severe straining to vomit. 

 

Abdomen: 

  • Spleen is affected; there is soreness and intense burning in the spleen, sensation as if the spleen is being pounded. 

  • There is an uneasy feeling without the desire for stool. 

 

Stool and Anus: 

  • Stools are too large and dark and expelled with difficulty. 

 

Urinary System: 

  • There is a bright red mealy sediment and thick mucus in urine. 

  • Patients suffer from stitching and crampy pains while urinating. 

 

Male: 

  • There is drawing pain and pressure in the testicles. 

 

Female: 

  • Patients suffer from bearing down pains as if the menses are about to start. 

  • There might be slight burning in the vagina. 

  • Patients may suffer from tumours of breast, which are associated with pain. 

 

Respiratory System: 

  • Hoarseness and roughness of voice. 

  • Expectoration is yellowish initially and then greenish; sometimes expectoration is scanty and blood-streaked. 

  • There is oppression and weakness of the upper part of the chest. 

  • Patients suffer from dry irritative cough. 

 

Extremities: 

  • Patients have rheumatic tension and stiffness in legs. 

  • Extremities become numb and there is a feeling as if there is no strength to lift the parts. 

  • There is no pain in the extremities when the patient is completely still, as soon as he starts moving, cramps, trembling and pain occurs. 

 

Skin: 

  • Skin is dry, rough and scaly. 

  • There are pimples and blotches on the skin; eruptions on the scalp which extend down to the face and neck. 

  • Indicated in cases of chronic skin diseases like psoriasis, Acne, Dry eczema and pruritis. 

  • There are indurations of glands.
